Prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer require surgery, but what if there are concerns about surgical damage or complications? Since completing the first transrectal ultra-minimally invasive AI-HIFU prostate surgery in South China late last year, Guangzhou United Family Hospital has successfully helped numerous patients (with the oldest being 85 years old) get rid of their prostate problems. The surgical process involves no incisions, no blood, and no wounds, ensuring curative effects while effectively protecting the patient’s urinary control and sexual functions.

“These cases perfectly demonstrate the three key core capabilities of AI-HIFU—precise localization, exact ablation, and accurate protection of important functions. This allows prostate patients to achieve ideal tumor ablation and lesion clearance while obtaining a satisfactory treatment experience and quality of life, without worrying about serious complications,” explained Dr. Yang Weiqing, Director of the Urology Department at the hospital. AI-HIFU technology provides more local treatment opportunities for prostate cancer and prostate hyperplasia patients who are in suboptimal physical condition, have poor tolerance for surgery, or are unwilling to undergo conventional surgery.

It is understood that Sonablate AI-HIFU is the world’s first device to enter the body via the rectum to treat prostate tumors from a distance. It is also currently the only cancer ultrasound treatment technology simultaneously certified by the EU CE, US FDA, and China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). Although this new technology has just entered China, it has long been widely recognized internationally, with numerous literatures such as European Urology confirming its excellent efficacy in treating urological diseases.

Guangzhou United Family Hospital took the lead in introducing this cutting-edge innovative technology in Guangdong Province and established the Prostate Ultra-Minimally Invasive Center, marking the hospital’s entry into the “non-invasive” era of prostate disease treatment. To further promote non-invasive treatment technology in the field of urology, the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Taiwan Frontier Non-Invasive Technology Academic Summit on Prostate Diseases & Unveiling Ceremony of the GBA AI-HIFU Training Center” was successfully held at Guangzhou United Family Hospital recently. Leading urological experts from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and other places gathered to discuss the new developments in non-invasive treatment for prostate diseases.

To provide a more intuitive understanding of this technology, Director Yang Weiqing arranged a live surgery broadcast on the day of the meeting. Through synchronized footage from the operating room, he demonstrated the process of AI-HIFU prostate cancer ablation surgery to medical colleagues and netizens both onsite and online. In this surgery, Director Yang successfully ablated the hyperplastic glandular tissue in the transition zone for a 60-year-old patient to alleviate urethral compression and improve urination, while simultaneously ablating most of the peripheral zone glands to achieve the goal of controlling prostate cancer. The surgery was successfully completed in the afternoon, and the patient was discharged the next day in good condition.

The official establishment of the GBA AI-HIFU Training Center marks that Guangzhou United Family Hospital will join hands with Tasly SonaCare to unite forces from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Together, they will further promote early screening and diagnosis of prostate diseases, and facilitate the training and application of AI-HIFU non-invasive surgery, providing a more comfortable treatment experience and a higher post-operative quality of life for patients with prostate diseases.
